In December each year certificates and special prizes
are presented to old students who left the School in the previous
summer.
This year, Maurice Flanagan was invited to present the prizes.
Those of us who were at school in the 1940s will remember
Maurice (Bud) as an outstanding athlete as well as a dab hand
at jazz piano!
Maurice was a pupil from 1941-47. He then went to Liverpool
University, where he obtained an Arts degree. He became a
navigator in the RAF and joined BOAC in 1953.
After working at many overseas airports, he then spent ten
years working in the UK as a member of British Airways senior
management. In 1978 he went on temporary secondment to work
for the Government of Dubai. He is still living there! Since
1986 he has been Group Managing Director of the Emirate Airline
Group.
Maurice spoke warmly of life in Dubai and of the harmonious
mix of all nationalities.
He was very pleased to be back at his old school and recalled
some of his most memorable incidents, including dangerous
encounters in mixed hockey matches!
